Troubleshooting your heating system

If you experience any trouble with your heating, you may always call Mid-Florida Heating & Air for help and service. But here are a few simple solutions you can attempt before calling us to your home for a service visit.

  1. Make sure that your thermostat is set in the "heat" position. The temperature setting on the thermostat must be set above (or higher than) the indoor temperature showing on the thermostat.

  2. Ensure that there is power to the furnace. Try turning the fan to "ON" using the fan switch on the thermostat to test for power to furnace. If that fails, check the circuit breakers at the electrical panel to make sure they are in the "On" position. In addition, check the SSU switch (it looks like a light switch on a gray box located at the furnace) to be sure it is in the "ON" position

  3. Replace the furnace filter if needed. All 1-inch thick furnace filters should be replaced monthly. Purolator 2-inch thick filters and other high-capacity pleated filters can most likely be changed every other month or just 6 times per year.

  4. Check all return air grilles to make sure they are not blocked by furniture.

  5. Check all supply air registers to make sure they are open and blowing air. (The return air grilles are normally located on your walls and are wide and flat.)

  6. Be sure that duct dampers are open. Duct dampers look like a wing nut on the bottom of your supply ducts. If the wings are perpendicular to the duct, air flow is blocked. Rotate the nut 90 degrees to restore air flow.

A quality furnace tune-up

Signs that your furnace needs servicing:

  • Unusual noises or unusually loud operation
  • Higher than normal energy bills
  • Not enough heat
  • Rust flakes at bottom of furnace housing
  • A yellow flame instead of a blue flame
  • Need to continually readjust thermostat
  • CO alarm triggered, or occupants feel lethargic, weak, or disoriented
  • Pilot light won't stay lit
  • Smell of gas

Annual furnace or boiler maintenance involves many steps. It's not a job that can be done in 20 minutes. Components must be checked to see if they are in good working order, are clean, and lubricated. The heat exchanger must be examined for cracks and corrosion. System performance must also be measured. Our technicians will clean and test your furnace thoroughly.

In addition, they will check CO detectors and thermostats to be sure they are operational. A clean filter of the correct size and type will be installed if necessary. Our technicians will also check to see that if the unit is receiving adequate combustion air and that there is adequate clearance between the appliance and combustible materials. Schedule a tune-up today before the busy seasons begin.
